Dead End Ancestors (deadendancestors.com) is a free, independent family history guide run by Ned Ashby. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it. The aim is to handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles.

What information is collected

  • Information you choose to send. If you email the site or leave a comment, I receive your name, email address and whatever you write.
  • Usage information. Like most websites, this site collects anonymous statistics about how it is used: pages visited, how long people stay, the type of device and browser, and the general region a visit comes from. This is collected through Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
  • Technical logs. The web host keeps standard server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running.

The site does not ask for, or want, sensitive personal information. Please don’t send details of living people’s health, finances or private family matters.

Cookies

Cookies are small files stored in your browser. This site uses them to make the site work, remember your cookie choices, and measure visits through Google Analytics. You can accept or decline non-essential cookies through the cookie banner, and you can clear or block cookies in your browser settings at any time.

How the information is used

  • To reply to your emails and questions
  • To understand which guides are useful, and improve them
  • To keep the site secure and working properly

Your information is never sold. It is only shared with the services that run the site, listed below, and where the law requires it.

Services that help run the site

  • Hostinger hosts the website.
  • Google provides Analytics and Search Console, which measure visits and search performance.

Some of these providers store data on servers outside Australia, including in the United States and Europe. Each has its own privacy policy explaining how it protects that data.

Links to other websites

The guides link to archives, registries, libraries and other research sites. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and this site isn’t responsible for how they handle your information.

Accessing or correcting your information

You can ask to see, correct or delete any personal information you’ve sent to the site, such as an email or comment. Get in touch through the contact page and I’ll respond within 30 days.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how your information has been handled, please contact me first. If you’re not satisfied with the response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Changes to this policy
